Moog Audio Montreal: Verify the Use-Map Before You Approve an Audio Plan

The most expensive part of an audio install is not the equipment. It’s the rework after the space is open and people are using it. I’m the quality and brand compliance manager at Moog Audio Montreal. I review roughly 200 venue audio plans a year for indoor entertainment, sports, and experience spaces. In 2024, I sent back 11% of first proposals before they became orders because the design didn’t match how the venue would actually be used. That redline is annoying at the time. It costs a fraction of pulling out cable after you have already sold memberships.

When I first started in this role, I assumed that good gear was enough. If the spec list included a Moog amplifier, well-matched speakers, and clean wiring, the room should sound like the brochure. Then, in my first year, I approved a plan for a mixed sports venue. The gear was solid. The cardio instructors were not. They needed music that could support target treadmill pace intervals, not just a pleasant background hum. Reconfiguring zone controls and adding another audio feed took six days and about $22,000 in labor and lost opening time. Not ideal. Workable eventually—but not a lesson I want to repeat.

Why does that matter to you? Because most expensive audio mistakes are preventable at the planning stage. After that project, I started asking for a use-map before sign-off: which activity, in which zone, during which hours, and with what level of verbal instruction. It feels like extra paperwork until the day it saves you a renovation.

Three zones that changed how I review plans

Cardio zone. A cardio corner is not a “loud music” room. It’s a place where the beat has to support a cadence without burying the coach. If a class is built around treadmill pace, the audio has to be adjustable so staff can match the tempo to the session. This is where the Moog app became part of my review checklist. The app can group zones, recall presets, and switch a room from stretching mode to interval mode. But presets only help if someone asks what those different modes are. I once had a client request “background music” for the whole venue. What they actually needed was loud, steady energy at 7am for interval work, and a much quieter floor-fill sound at 2pm for a strength workshop. Same room, different use. One preset cannot cover both.

To be clear, I do not mean the control app is the whole answer. I mean the conversation about the app is. If the venue plan says two zones with separate volume but doesn’t say when each zone changes, I send it back. A fader sitting between “background” and “treadmill pace” is not a control scheme. It is a decision that gets made by whoever is babysitting the system that day.

Strength zone. A strength area is a voice-critical zone. First-time lifters need to see and hear instructions. A small sign that says “where to place feet on leg press” is useful only if the trainer’s voice can cut through the room. If you put a subwoofer cluster over that area, the bass eats the vocal frequencies. The louder the system, the worse the problem. I’ve seen rooms where the fix was moving loudspeakers farther away and letting the coach be the focus.

Game lounge. People often think the answer to a bad-sounding space is more speakers. It is often fewer, better-placed speakers. Expensive gear makes placement mistakes more obvious, because good speakers reproduce bad acoustics accurately. For example, a relaxed evening around a Sims board game does not need floor-shaking sound. It needs clear speech frequencies and a light background layer. One well-placed ceiling speaker can beat two powerful boxes blasting from the same wall. Direction matters. Volume is not a substitute for placement.

I still run into the temptation to treat speaker count as the main metric. A plan with 24 speakers can sound worse than one with eight if the eight are placed around the way people move. The number of devices is not the design. The experience is the design. That sounds obvious, but it’s the first thing cut when a project falls behind.

Why prevention beats another tech upgrade

The recurring phrase in our internal reviews is: five minutes of verification can save five days of correction. Since I created a planning checklist two years ago, our own tracking suggests we’ve avoided at least $8,000 in potential rework per year. This is not an industry benchmark; it’s our number. Downtime is the cost people forget. You can fix a speaker placement in a day, but a room in use has to schedule that fix around classes, events, and leases.

My checklist is simpler than you think:

  • What activity happens in each zone, and at which hour?
  • Can trainers be heard over the intended music level?
  • Does the control app let staff change presets as usage changes, or do they have to ride the volume fader all night?
  • Are sources of noise—treadmills, fans, people—mapped against the speaker coverage?

Nothing on that list is an engineering mystery. It is just collecting the same information a good operator already has in their head and putting it on paper. That’s the part that prevents rework.

But I do not want to overstate the checklist. It is not a substitute for knowing the venue’s audience. A nightclub that runs daytime classes has a different culture than a community rec center. A single-room training studio might not need a formal use-map; one good amp and two speakers can be enough. Some rooms are forgiving enough that almost any decent system works. In those cases, verification is quick, and the extra process is just overhead. If this sounds like extra process, it can be. Process isn’t the goal. The goal is to catch mismatches when they are still text changes instead of construction changes. A use-map is not a document; it’s a method.

The one exception I still get wrong is assuming someone else’s “background music” means the same thing to me as it does to them. So if you’re about to build or refresh an indoor entertainment or sports space, try this before you buy anything: stand in the room during its busiest hour. Ask where a trainer speaks, where a member stretches, where a group starts a board game. Write it down. Then ask us to put it into the audio plan. That’s the prevention that pays for itself.
