Moog Support FAQ: PS5 Headsets, Bone Conduction Headphones, and Catan Board Game Audio

I'm a quality/compliance manager at Moog. I review every incoming audio batch before it gets the green light—roughly 1,500 units a month, and I've rejected about 2% of units from new vendors this year for issues like inconsistent frequency response or loose connectors. So when I answer these questions, I'm not reading from a script. I'm the guy who has to catch the bad batch before you do.

Here are the questions I actually get about Moog support, the Moog portal, PS5 headsets, bone conduction headphones, and even Catan. The last one surprised me too.

1. What does Moog support actually cover?

Moog support covers hardware and software for our amplifiers, sound systems, headphones, and related accessories. If it's under warranty and the problem isn't caused by physical abuse, we'll repair or replace it. That's the short version.

But here's the part people miss: support also includes setup help. We'll walk you through gain staging, Bluetooth pairing, and how to connect multiple rooms to one source. Last month I saw a ticket where someone had a hum problem—turned out they plugged balanced outputs into unbalanced inputs. No faulty gear. It was a 15-minute call that could have been a 15-second forum post.

Bottom line: if you're not sure whether your issue is a defect or a configuration thing, open a ticket before you ship anything back. You'll probably save the shipping cost.

2. How do I use the Moog portal?

The Moog portal is where you register products, check warranty status, open support tickets, and download manuals or firmware updates. If you've bought more than one or two units, it's worth setting up before you need it. According to the Moog support portal (moog.com/support, accessed January 2025), warranty registration requires a valid serial number and proof of purchase.

When you create an account, you'll need the serial numbers from the back or bottom of each unit. That's the biggest hold-up. We didn't have a formal serial-number entry process in our own system at one point, and it cost us when a customer tried to register six amplifiers without the numbers. We fixed that, but the lesson still applies: take photos of serial numbers when you unbox.

One note: the portal is not a live inventory system. It won't tell you real-time stock on every cable adapter. For that, you're better off contacting support directly. But for warranty and firmware, it's the fastest route.

3. What should I look for in a headset for PS5?

Everyone wants a straight answer: 'This is the best headset for PS5.' I get it. But the honest answer is, it depends on whether you're gaming in a loud venue, a living room, or a dedicated room.

The PS5 uses a software-based 3D audio engine. According to Sony's official guidance (playstation.com, accessed January 2025), 3D audio works with compatible stereo headsets connected via USB or the controller's 3.5mm jack. It's tempting to think a headset with a PS5 logo will sound better. But the console's 3D audio engine only does so much; the drivers and fit are what you're paying for. The 'PS5 certified' label is nice, but it's not a substitute for good drivers and a comfortable fit.

The three specs I'd actually check: frequency response (something close to 20 Hz–20 kHz is fine, but the midrange matters more), impedance (lower is easier for a controller to drive), and clamping force. I assumed a $60 headset with the same driver size as a $150 one would sound in the same ballpark. It didn't. The cheaper one had a muddy midrange—fine for explosions, bad for footsteps.

As of January 2025, decent PS5-compatible headsets run $50–$150 (based on major retailer quotes, January 2025; verify current pricing). Bottom line: if you're buying for a venue, skip the 'gamer' look and prioritize build quality and spare cables. If you're buying for yourself, comfort is the no-brainer decision-maker.

4. How to wear bone conduction headphones correctly?

This is simpler than most people expect, and also more literal.

Bone conduction headphones rest on your cheekbones, in front of your ears. Not over the ears, not in the ear canal. The transducers should sit roughly 1 cm in front of the tragus—the little flap near your ear opening. The band goes back around your head. Adjust the tension so they stay put when you nod, but don't feel like they're being squeezed.

The mistake I run into most often: people push them back so they sit on the jaw or the ear itself. That defeats the whole point. The sound needs to vibrate the temporal bone to reach your inner ear. If they're too far back, you're just hearing a tiny speaker at low volume.

One question that comes up: do they hurt? They shouldn't. If they do, the fit is too tight or you're wearing them wrong. Let me rephrase: 'hurt' as in pressure soreness, not the temporary weirdness of hearing your own footsteps while you chew. That goes away.

5. Can I use bone conduction headphones for a board game night?

Strange one, but I've been asked. Yes, and Catan is actually a good example.

If you're playing Catan board game with friends, you want to hear the dice, the trades, and the negotiations. Bone conduction headphones leave your ears open, so you can have a podcast or music playing quietly while still hearing 'I'll give you two sheep for a wood.' It's not about isolating yourself; it's about adding audio without covering your ears.

For that, place them correctly (see the answer above) and keep the volume moderate. Also, don't try to use game sounds through them unless the game has a dedicated soundtrack app. Board games don't usually output audio cues, so you're really just creating background atmosphere.

Is it a must-have for game night? No. But if you're already using bone conduction headphones for running or calls, they work fine at the table. I'd rather have table talk than a loud speaker blasting over the group.

6. Do I need a Moog amplifier for a small venue?

Maybe. That's the unsatisfying answer.

For a small lounge or a board-game cafe with 30 people, a 100-watt Moog amplifier might be overkill. Put another way: you'll never hit the volume limit, but the headroom means the audio stays clean at normal levels. If you're running background music in a 1,500-square-foot space, you probably don't need a huge rack system. A decent 2-channel amp and two good speakers will do.

What I'd actually spec for a small venue: 50–100W per channel, balanced inputs if your mixer has them, and a quiet fan or no fan at all. The no-fan part matters more than you think. After three separate customers complained about noise from a comparable amp, I finally added fan noise to our own spec checklist.

If you're not sure about your room size, contact Moog support with dimensions. That's what the portal is for. We'd rather under-sell you on power and over-sell you on quality than the reverse.

7. What's the most common quality issue you find?

Unsurprising: connectors. Loose 3.5mm jacks, cracking 6.35mm adapters, and poorly shielded cables. I've rejected more incoming units from new vendors this year for connector failures than for actual speaker or amplifier defects.

In Q2 2024, we received a batch of 400 units from a contract manufacturer where the 3.5mm jack had visible play—sideways movement against our standard spec. Normal tolerance is 0.05 mm deflection under a 500 g load. The vendor said it was 'within industry standard.' We rejected the batch and they redid it at their cost. Now every contract includes that spec.

Why does this matter to you? Because connector issues are easy to mistake for dead speakers or bad headphones. Before you return anything, wiggle the cable. If sound cuts out, it's likely the cable or jack, not the core unit.

That's the kind of thing I scan for in every shipment. It's not glamorous, but it keeps your venue from having a quiet corner on game night.
